Conference Sport and Sustainability, 8-10 April 2026

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly urgent issue in sport. Due to dynamically growing ecological and social challenges (e.g. climate change, social inequalities), sports organisations are increasingly con-fronted with questions regarding the sustainable and responsible design of their activities. When planning and implementing sports programmes, building sports facilities and staging events, there are many interactions and conflicting goals between the sustainability dimensions of the envi-ronment, society and the economy. This is precisely where we want to start with our conference on Sport and Sustainability. We are delighted that we have been able to bring together three sport science communities – the Sport Economics Working Group, the dvs-Section Sport Sociology and the Sportainable think tank – to work together on this topic.
We are planning a diverse scientific programme that will use different for-mats to address on the one hand the question of how activities in the con-text of sport can be more closely aligned with the criteria of sustainable development and on the other hand how the potential of sport can be used even more effectively for overarching sustainability goals. The aim is not only to highlight knowledge bases and sustainability concepts, but above all to discuss ways and innovative approaches to sustainable action.
